Monsters, Mayhem & Magic at Emerald City Comic Con!
Out First Time At Emerald City Comic Con
Thousands of cosplayers, collectors, and comic fans descended on Seattle's Washington State Convention Center on March 7–8, 2025 for Emerald City Comic Con (ECCC) — and right in the middle of all the action, tucked inside the PlaytestNW dedicated playtesting space, Ultramons was ready to battle.
It was our first time at ECCC, and we couldn't have asked for a better debut. Over two packed days, we ran 8 playtesting sessions — each one a ~40-minute monster showdown — welcoming everyone from seasoned tabletop gamers to curious families wandering by and asking "what's this game about?"
The Energy Was Electric
PlaytestNW created a brilliant space for game creators and players to connect. The foot traffic was fantastic — a steady stream of people curious about what was being demoed, always ready to sit down for a game. Whether it was a parent trying to keep up with their monster-battle-obsessed kid, or a hardcore gamer looking for their next favourite card game, Ultramons had something for everyone.
One session that stood out? Palash himself sat down across from a challenger who was down to their last monster — cornered, outgunned, seemingly finished. What followed was one of the most nail-biting comebacks of the weekend, a dazzling sequence of surprise powers and tactical plays that had onlookers leaning in.
The comeback fell just short in the end, but the grin on every face told the real story: this game gets people.
What Players Loved
Session after session, three things kept coming up:
🔥 Fast-paced gameplay — Players loved that a full game fits into a focused ~40 minutes. No downtime, no waiting — every turn matters.
🎲 The surprise element — Special powers like Dual Shot, Combine, and Shield kept everyone on their toes. You never quite know what your opponent has up their sleeve.
🎨 The artwork — At a comic con, art appreciation runs high — and the Ultramons illustrations drew genuine admiration from players of all ages.
Learning and Growing
Playtesting isn't just about showing off what's great — it's about learning what can be even better. The thoughtful feedback we gathered across those 8 sessions is already shaping ideas for the next edition of Ultramons.
We came away energised, with a notebook full of insights and a deeper appreciation for the community of players who engage so generously with new games.
The Raffle Winner!
PlaytestNW ran a raffle across the weekend, giving away board games to lucky winners. Ultramons was proud to be one of the prizes — and the winner walked away with a signed copy, personally handed over by Ultramons creator Palash.
Just look at that smile, in the photo above. 🎉
Just the Beginning
ECCC 2025 was a milestone for Ultramons — our first major comic con, our first PlaytestNW showcase, and proof that the monsters Palash dreamed up on blank sheets of paper can captivate a room full of strangers just as powerfully as they did that first evening at home.
If you were one of the players who stopped by — thank you. You made this weekend unforgettable.
And if you didn't get the chance to play? Good news: Ultramons is available right now. Come join the battle. 🐉
